Institute of Genomics and Bioinformatics

Department History

Brief Introduction

  1. On August 1, 1997, the school established the Institute of Bioinformatics.
  2. On August 1, 1998, it was renamed as ‘Institute of Genomics and Bioinformatics’.
  3. On August 1, 2003, the Department started operating the ‘Ph.D. Program in Medical Biotechnology’ for the doctoral degree in medical biotechnology.

After several years of establishment, the biotechnology-related institutes of National Chung Hsing University have achieved remarkable results in biotechnological research. In recent years, advances in bioinformatics have provided more support for research and applications of modern molecular biology and biotechnology. Therefore, the institute teaches and encourages students to learn more about bioinformatics, make good use of the abundant resources provided, and acquire the bioinformatics expertise required in life sciences research. In the post-genomic era, large amounts of genomic data are rapidly generated and accumulated to increase our understanding of biology. Therefore, genomics and bioinformatics are, in fact, inseparable. Because of the need to integrate, analyze, quantify large amounts of data, and combine genomics and bioinformatics in teaching and research, the Institute of Bioinformatics was expanded and renamed ‘Institute of Genomics and Bioinformatics.’

About us!

The teachers in the institute have theoretical and practical expertise in both biology and computer-related technologies. The purpose of this institute is to assist students in developing genomics and bioinformatics skills required for industrial and academic research. The curriculum integrates theory and practice to reduce the academic gap between learning and practical application and cultivate research talents in biomedical information and precision medicine. This cutting-edge research program and its application could promote new drug development, potentially contributing to the success of personalized medical biotechnology and information technology. Therefore, the program gears toward the development of a Bio-IT industry. The skills acquired will be applicable in Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Programming, and Big Data research.

The institute also operates a Ph.D. program in Medical Biotechnology to train students in medical biotechnology and bioinformatics. The course is appropriate for physicians, pharmacists, and researchers in biotechnology and development.
